Day of the Dead (November 2nd) is one of my favorite Mexican traditions. I love the colors, the flowers, the importance given to family and remembering your loved ones, and the creativity and sense of humor with which people create the altars and the calaveritas (a version of haikus). Food plays a central role in these festivities, since you typically include some of the favorite dishes of your loved ones on the altar. Here is my tribute to the typical chocolate skulls (called calaveritas de chocolate) that are usually used to decorate the altars (see the picture below). Of course, these chocolates are a healthy version but they are spookily good! Plus, they are dairy-free and sugar-free so they are a great option for the little ones. I’m also sharing the link to the molds I used, these were adorable!

  • 3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder

Instructions

Step 1

Start by melting the coconut oil (I put it in the microwave for 20 seconds). Add the cocoa powder and mix. Add stevia and salt to taste and mix.

Step 2

Add the chocolate mix to the molde by splitting the mix into 6 portions. Put the mold in the freezer for about two hours.

Step 3

Remove the mold from the freezer and pop out the chocolates. Your treats are ready!

Full disclosure, I write these blogs in my spare time. I do not have an editor and am the only one who reviews the content. As a result, it is likely I’ll have the occasional typo or grammar mistake. If you find anything, feel free to let me know.

Lastly, I’ll admit food photography is not my forte. If you make the recipe and have a better picture, please share and I will happily post it and give you photo cred!
